These big chunky bars are all made from scratch in the time honored, cold-process tradition with food-grade kosher lye.
Of course, there's nothing left of the lye (sodium hydroxide) after the bars *cure* (which takes 4-6 weeks) except soap. I've experimented with different oils to see what results occur. Traditional oils such as coconut, tallow and lard result in a much harder, long lasting bar whereas olive, soy and canola are much softer. Milk, honey, beeswax and other additives affect the lather and conditioning. The essential oils are the finishing touch for each blend, imparting fragrance and specific qualities.
Each bar weighs 7 to 7.5 oz. when cut (a manly size) but evaporation over time lessens the actual weight (not size) to 6+ oz.
An average size bar of soap is typically 3.5 to 4 oz. so these are especially long lasting at 1.5+ times the size of a typical bar.
Our newest soap bars, two of which are already online (Seventh Heaven and Summer of Love), weigh a full ounce more and sell for $10.50 rather than $8.50. This is due to the increased size and also the increasing cost(s) of essential oils this year.
